Maguire shines again in Europe

Harry Maguire continues to impress in the Europa League, delivering another standout performance for Manchester United. After scoring a last-minute goal in extra time against Lyon during the quarter-finals – while playing up front – Maguire was once again influential in the semi-final first leg against Athletic Bilbao.
In the 29th minute, the 32-year-old defender surprised everyone by dribbling past Mikel Jauregizar and delivering a dangerous cross into the box. Manuel Ugarte helped the ball on, and Casemiro was there to head it into the net, putting United ahead at San Mames stadium.
The moment drew widespread admiration, with some comparing his footwork to Brazilian great Ronaldinho. Fans on social media even gave him a new nickname: “Harrydinho.”
Surprise move from the back
BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Andros Townsend couldn’t believe what he saw. “The feints, the movement – I had to do a double take,” the former Spurs winger said during the broadcast.
Even those who know Maguire well were caught off guard. Phil Jones, once a teammate, admitted he never witnessed such flair in training. “Credit to him – excellent delivery,” he added.
Club captain Bruno Fernandes, who later converted a penalty and scored again before the break, expressed his admiration too. “What a winger! I didn’t expect that from him,” he said. “He’s grown more confident, his presence is stronger, and he’s proving to be a real leader.”
Manager and player reactions
United manager Ruben Amorim highlighted Maguire’s journey through difficult times, praising the defender for his ongoing contributions. “He’s doing everything for the team. We need to appreciate these moments,” the coach said.
Reflecting on his role in the goal, Maguire explained how the chance unfolded. “I found myself at the far post – Garna played the ball to me. I managed some skill moves and delivered a good cross,” he said. “It was great to see so many teammates in the box, showing faith in me. It felt good, and it ended with a fantastic header.”
