If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Well, mostly, at least in the case of the Tern GSD cargo e-bike.

Tern has updated its GSD cargo e-bike for a third generation. The first bike was easily one of the most innovative cargo e-bikes in quite some time; its 20-inch wheels looked small, but its capacity and capability were absolutely shocking. The second-generation bike felt every bit as impressive as the first, just with more refinement.

And this third-generation bike? Well, Tern says it has refined the formula even more. The bike can still be stored vertically as always, but they say it now boasts an increased carrying capacity, more confident handling under load, and a slew of new features including Bosch’s anti-lock braking system.

Below is the first look at the Tern GSD. We’ll have the chance to dig into this with Tern soon on our first ride; stay tuned for that shortly.

What did Tern update compared to the previous-generation GSD?

The key update to know here is that Tern has upped the GSD max payload capacity to 210 kg (463 lbs), which makes it one of the highest-capacity long tail cargo bikes on the market today. Tern says that much of that strength comes from a redesigned frame with larger-diameter hydroformed tubing.

Interestingly, that claimed strength comes despite Tern swapping out the built-in rear rack of the second-generation GSD for a bolt-on rack in the same style as the Tern Quick Haul Long.

All Tern GSD models come with a Bosch Cargo Line drive unit that offers up to 85 Nm torque, paired to either a Bosch 500 545, or 800 Wh battery to offer between 25 and 89 miles (40 to 144 km) of range. That said, only the top-end GSD S10 and R14 models receive the Smart System, which adds Bosch’s own subscription-based GPS tracking, a remote e-bike lock, e-bike alarm, and over-the-air updates.

Tern is also making a big deal of those top-end models receiving Bosch ABS, or anti-lock braking system. The idea works similarly to your car’s braking system, modulating braking power under full load to ensure the bike stops with as much grip as possible and without the rider flipping over the bars. While it might be hard to flip a bike that weighs as much as 85 pounds (38 kg), Tern says having ABS should ‘set a new benchmark for safety in the cargo bike category.’

Further, Tern claims improvements across the board. That includes how easy it is to mount or unmount the Atlas Lockstand (with its handlebar-based remote), how the seat post levers are easier to operate for folks with smaller hands, or the claimed added stiffness.

Tern’s also offering a slew of new accessories

There are a number of new accessories introduced with the updated GSD, including an updated Captain’s Chair that allows for big kids and adults alike to ride along. All current GSD accessories are compatible with this second-generation HSD, including the Cache Box for in-bike storage.

One notable addition is the use of Stow Decks, a folding footrest for rear passengers found on the Tern Orox and Quick Haul Long. There’s also a new Sun Shield which claims to block UV rays, but offers panels that roll up on the side for ventilation. Paired with that is the Rain Shield, an add on for the Sun Shield that adds rain protection for rear cargo and passengers.
