Arsenal express interest in Atalanta hitman Mateo Retegui

Arsenal are among several clubs tracking Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui ahead of a possible summer move.
Mateo Retegui has been in sensational form for Atalanta since moving from Genoa in August 2024. The Argentina-born talent has plundered 20 goals and three assists in 23 Serie A games thus far, playing an instrumental role in Atalanta sitting third in the table and surprisingly pushing for the Scudetto.
The 25-year-old scored four goals in a 5-0 demolition of Hellas Verona earlier this month, in which he became the first player to score a first-half hat-trick for Atalanta in Serie A. it seems inevitable that he will move on from Atalanta for pastures anew at some point.
Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Atalanta over a move for Retegui but Manchester United also remain very interested. There is also interest from Juventus, Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in the Italian centre-forward.
Arsenal desperately need a striker
Arsenal are beefing up their attempts to sign a top striker during the coming summer transfer window—something they failed in doing so during the winter window despite knowing the requirements.
Bukayo Saka has undergone hamstring injury and remains out for the foreseeable future, while Gabriel Jesus’ season is over following an ACL injury. To make matters worse, Mikel Arteta has also lost Kai Havertz for the rest of the season after hamstring surgery, having suffered torn hamstring when training in Dubai last week. Also, Gabriel Martinelli faces a month on the sidelines due to a hamstring issue.
The Gunners are dealing with an injury crisis as they bid to hunt down Liverpool in the Premier League title race. Makeshift striker Mikel Merino scored twice as Arsenal beat relegation-threatened Leicester City 2-0 on Saturday. While Arteta will have to make do with the resources he currently has, the Emirates Stadium chiefs have started planning for the next campaign. And Mateo Retegui is being monitored.
Retegui has been nothing short of incredible for Atalanta, and his rise in Italian football has caught the eyes of Arsenal. It is believed that La Dea will ask for around €60 million for the Italy international, who possesses the qualities to thrive in the Premier League.
The Gunners have been lacking a ruthless striker for many seasons now, and Retegui could be that player for them. The San Fernando-born talent would be a good fit in Arteta’s system, providing a regular supply of goals which Arsenal desperately wants. That being said, however, it remains to be seen whether the North London giants meet Atalanta’s financial demands for Retegui.
